Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training for Hemophilia and Other Arthritic Conditions

This 2-day hands-on course was developed to provide training in musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) for evaluation of hemophilic joint disease, but also other arthritic conditions and musculoskeletal abnormalities and syndromes. The main objective of the course is to enable physicians and other health care providers to use MSKUS as a point-of-care imaging tool for diagnosis and treatment of joint pain. In addition, the course has specific elements geared towards hemophilic joint disease: recognition of joint bleeding, synovial hypertrophy and synovitis, cartilage degradation, osteochondral lesions and other structural joint abnormalities. The course also includes a teaching module pertaining to the Joint Tissue Activity and Damage Exam (JADE), a validated ultrasound imaging protocol for hemophilic joints.

Participants are encouraged to complete web modules 1, 2, 4, and 5 cme.ucsd.edu/httc/musksweb.html prior to attending the activity (a total of 2 hours of web-based instructions).

Ultrasound-Guided Joint Injection and Aspiration for Arthritic Conditions and Hemophilia will provide training in ultrasound-guided intra-articular needle placement, to perform non-invasive management of painful joints through intra-articular corticosteroid injections, aspirations of joint fluid/blood in patients with orthopedic conditions, sports injuries or hemophilia. In-plane and out-of plane needle advancement will be demonstrated on pig cadaver joints with hands-on practice on phantom or similar tissue. -Incorporate advanced tibio-pedal access in combination with antegrade access in limb salvage procedures
-Describe tips and tricks for safe and effective surgical and endovascular treatment of CLI from access to closure
-Describe unique considerations when evaluating the diabetic foot ulcer in the setting of CLI
-Describe currently available drug eluting technology for the treatment of above the knee and below the knee lesions in the patient with CLI

• Identify the diagnostic criteria and management strategies for acute and chronic pain, anxiety disorder, insomnia, depression and substance abuse
• Employ interviewing techniques relating to the diagnosis and management of substance abuse in general and prescription drug abusers in particular
• Discuss risk management strategies
