Ineffective Perineal
Padding Techniques
Currently the staff and/or surgeon, while positioning the patient on the fracture table, may wrap the hard rubber post with either cotton wrapping or egg crate foam material. Neither of these is designed specifically for the post. Due to this, the material is ill fitting and frequently shifts during the procedure and risks exposing the patient’s skin to contact with the rubber post material. This can result in potential for skin damage, as well as loss of padding between the patient and the post.

The improvised foam or cotton padding provides only a thin layer of protection between the patient and the perineal post. This thin layer can lead to both skin and compressive injuries to the underlying soft tissue such as nerve and muscle. Traction applied during the surgical procedure can cause the patient’s peroneum to press firmly against the post and a thicker foam padding is ideal. The currently available foam type pads are thin and insufficient to provide adequate protection to the patient’s perineum. Current methods of placing foam and/or cotton padding do not provide an adequate padding and/or coverage.

Pad Design & Application
The perineal pad is utilized in surgical procedures such as hip fractures, intramedullary nailings, percutaneous pinnings of femoral neck fractures and hip arthroscopies. Any surgical procedure where the patient is positioned with a perineal post in the peroneum.

The perineal pad provides the surgeon a protective piece of cylindrical foam rubber with top into which the perIneal post slips, and then post and pad are secured to the fracture table. The patient is then positioned in the typical fashion with the peroneum pressed against the well padded post with a several cm thick layer of foam material. The pad is circumferential and closed at the top preventing slippage or movement during the surgical procedure, thus providing the ideal protective covering for the post and insuring patient safety and comfort.

The pad is disposable and is intended as a one time use only. (https://orpegpad.com/perineal-pads/)
