Seven options of this plate were developed to allow for maximum flexibility in bunion correction using the patented Gorilla® BOW & ARROW™ Base Opening Wedge Plates. Design features of these plates include a truncated, angled proximal portion of the plate, allow the surgeon to align the plate just distal to the 1st tarsometatarsal joint, allowing for a more proximal osteotomy in the metaphyseal area. The 0.0 mm Wedge option can be used for a closing base wedge osteotomy or alternate proximal metatarsal osteotomy. The remaining options give variability to the foot and ankle surgeon on the amount of correction the plate provides.
Paragon 28®'s Design Rationale:
We designed this plate to minimize the risk of breaking the lateral cortex of the metatarsal when creating and distracting the osteotomy. Because the plate is truncated and tapered to match the 1st tarsometatarsal medial profile, the plate can be placed more proximally on the metatarsal. This shifts the osteotomy to the metaphyseal area of bone, with increase mallealibility and healing potential than the diaphyseal area. (http://www.paragon28.com/)
